What oil should I use on a tufting gun?
Use the lubricant named in your gun's manual and apply it only at the listed points. Sewing machine oil is a common recommendation, but advice about WD-40 and oiling intervals differs between makers.

Follow the manual for your model
Tuft the World recommends sewing machine oil or 3-in-1 multipurpose oil for its machines, and says not to use WD-40 or heavy grease. Tufty.eu's oil guide also recommends sewing machine oil and lists WD-40 as an option. Since those instructions conflict, use the exact product manual for your own gun. If it gives no guidance, ask the maker before using a spray lubricant.
Do not assume that oiling the same four rails or bearings applies to every gun. Tuft the World's maintenance guide lists separate points for low-pile and high-pile machines. Its diagram and instructions cover named models, not generic marketplace guns.
How often should you oil it?
The published schedules differ. Tuft the World recommends oiling before each use, and every two hours during long sessions. Tufty's AK-1 maintenance notes say to add a drop to each linear bearing at least once a week, and more often during long sessions. Use your model's schedule rather than turning either into a rule for every gun.
Oil points and amount also vary. Turn the gun off and unplug it before cleaning or applying oil. Wipe excess so it does not transfer to cloth or yarn.
A careful maintenance check
- Identify the model and open its manual.
- Confirm the oil type, points, and interval listed for that model.
- Switch the gun off and unplug it before applying oil.
- Apply only at the specified moving parts, then remove visible excess.
- If the gun still squeaks, slows, or jams, check the manual's troubleshooting steps instead of adding oil everywhere.
Tuft the World's machine maintenance guide recommends sewing-machine oil or 3-in-1 oil and says not to use WD-40 or heavy grease. Tufty.eu's oil guide accepts WD-40. This disagreement is why the model manual takes priority.
What owner discussions can tell you
Owners also trade conflicting oil advice in a discussion about buying and maintaining an Amazon gun. That thread is useful context, not a replacement for the machine maker's instructions. This page relies on published maker guidance and does not report a lubrication test.
