Why does yarn keep coming out of my tufting gun?
Check the yarn path and needle opening before changing the yarn. A loose strand can catch on the frame or gun, while an opening that does not suit the yarn can let it slip or make it bind.

Start with the yarn path
Stop the gun and rethread it from the cone or skein through every guide and the needle eye shown in your manual. Pull enough yarn to move freely, then look for a snag at the frame, cloth, yarn hook, or a tangled skein.
In one r/Tufting troubleshooting thread, an owner traced repeated thread loss to yarn catching around the frame and gun hook. That is one setup report, but it is a quick place to look before adjusting the machine.
If the yarn slips out or binds at the needle
Match the needle opening to the yarn and the gun model. Tufty.eu's instructions for the AK-V and AK-1 explain that a tight opening can catch thicker yarn, while a loose opening can let thinner yarn slip. The page is specific to those models; other guns may use a different regulator or needle.
ClawLab describes the same issue on the H1: its regulator changes the opening, and the maker says moving it slightly forward makes the opening smaller for thinner yarn. Follow the H1 manual and FAQ only if you own that model. Do not borrow a screw adjustment from another gun.
For an unknown or generic gun, find the exact model manual before loosening anything. Do not force a thick strand through the needle.
Use a short feed check before changing supplies
- Check that the yarn unwinds without a knot or a strand trapped under the skein.
- Move the yarn path so it does not drag on the frame or hang on hardware.
- Rethread the gun and confirm the strand passes through the needle without force.
- Use a small scrap of cloth to check the feed before continuing the rug.
If a correctly threaded strand still slips, compare its weight and strand count with the machine manual. Our yarn guide explains why there is no single strand count for every needle. A mechanical jam or a gun that stops mid-stroke belongs in the cutting checker or the maker's support instructions.
Sources and limits
The fit guidance comes from Tufty.eu's AK-V and AK-1 needle-hole instructions and ClawLab's H1 support notes. Two owner discussions describe yarn repeatedly falling out: one about constant unthreading and one about thread falling out or being cut. Those reports identify problems owners encountered; they do not establish a fix for every gun.
