Roberts 3095 vs 3000 vs rug latex for tufting: what applies?

The Roberts data sheets describe flooring adhesives. Tufting-specific latex is documented for a different job: holding pile at the back of primary cloth. Keep those uses separate when choosing glue.

Product or categoryPublished useWhat that means for tufting
Roberts 3095Roberts describes it as a high-solids SBR latex carpet adhesive for direct or double-bond carpet installation. The data sheet does not describe locking yarn into handmade primary cloth or attaching a rug backing.
Roberts 3000Roberts describes it as a multipurpose flooring adhesive for most commercial carpet and felt-backed sheet vinyl. Its sheet identifies the product type as SBR latex. The listed use is flooring installation. It does not give tufting instructions for yarn, primary cloth, or a finished rug.
Tufting-specific latexTuft the World describes synthetic latex for securing pile on the back of a tufted piece and treats secondary backing as a separate step. This is manufacturer guidance for tufting. It does not establish that every product called natural rug latex has the same ingredients or use.

Read the Roberts 3095 product data sheet and Roberts 3000 product data sheet. Both describe flooring jobs rather than adhesive applied to tufted yarn and cloth.

How tufting latex differs from carpet adhesive

A primary coat holds yarn in the cloth. A separate adhesive may be used to attach secondary backing. Tuft the World’s adhesive guide describes synthetic latex for the tufting step and discusses backing separately.

Do not infer that natural liquid latex, synthetic latex, and flooring adhesive will behave alike. Check the exact product’s manufacturer instructions for the materials, application, ventilation, and cure conditions. If the documents do not cover tufted primary cloth, ask the manufacturer before applying it to a finished piece.

Why floor coverage and cure details do not transfer

Roberts lists trowel coverage, open time, working time, and cure information for the named flooring installations. Those details depend on the listed flooring, substrate, trowel, and application method. They do not provide coverage or a cure estimate for glue spread into hand-tufted yarn.

Do not estimate glue per rug from a floor-installation coverage rate. Use the exact tufting adhesive maker’s instructions. If no guide covers your cloth and yarn, pause and ask the manufacturer.

For another Roberts comparison, read Roberts 3095 vs 6700. It covers the listed carpet uses and limits of both product sheets.

No Roberts purchase link is published here. The marketplace listing stays withheld until the live variant title, container size, and seller match the product data sheet.

For secondary backing fabric, these spray adhesives are separate from the flooring sheets above. They are not tuft-locking coats.

Choose by the layer you need to bond

  • Yarn to primary cloth: look for a product whose manufacturer documents tufting use and follow its application instructions.
  • Secondary backing: check that the adhesive instructions cover both materials and the way you plan to apply it.
  • Unclear use: do not assume a carpet-installation product is suitable for a hand-tufted rug. Ask its manufacturer.

Roberts adhesive and rug latex FAQ

Is Roberts 3095 designed for tufted rugs?

Its product sheet describes carpet installation and does not specify using it to lock yarn into handmade primary cloth, so those specifications do not establish suitability for tufted rugs.

How does Roberts 3000 differ from Roberts 3095?

Roberts describes 3095 as a carpet adhesive for direct or double-bond installation; it describes 3000 as a multipurpose flooring adhesive for commercial carpet and felt-backed sheet vinyl. Neither data sheet gives a tufting application.

Can I use floor-adhesive coverage or cure details for a tufted rug?

No. The product-sheet coverage and timing are tied to flooring installs with listed substrates and methods. Neither document gives a coverage or cure figure for adhesive applied to hand-tufted yarn and cloth.
