Can you use Red Heart Super Saver for tufting?
Super Saver is labeled as medium weight #4 acrylic yarn. That makes it a plausible option for a tufting gun, but the label does not say how it will feed through your needle. Check your gun's guidance and run a small sample before buying for a full rug.

What the Super Saver label says
Yarnspirations lists Red Heart Super Saver as medium weight #4. Solid colors are listed as 100% acrylic, 198 g, and 364 yd. Prints, stripes, variegated yarns, flecks, and heathers are listed at 141 g and 236 yd, and flecks are 96% acrylic with 4% other fibers. Check the label on the exact skein.
Those figures describe the yarn. They do not set a strand count for every tufting gun or predict how a finished rug will wear. Follow the gun maker's yarn guidance, then check that the yarn passes through the needle without force.
See the Red Heart Super Saver manufacturer page for the published fiber, weight, and package details.
Super Saver, Soft, and Comfort are different yarn lines
Owner comments about one Red Heart line do not establish how another line feeds. A few tufting discussions describe different results:
On narrow screens, scroll the table horizontally to read every column.
| Yarn line | What the sources say | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Super Saver | The maker lists medium #4 acrylic. Owners have reported using it, but the discussions do not establish one strand count or fit for every gun. | Start with the gun manual and a short sample using the exact skein. |
| Soft | One owner warned that Red Heart Soft fell out and loosened in their cloth. That is a single report about Soft, not Super Saver. | Do not transfer that result to another line without checking it. |
| Comfort | One owner said they mixed Comfort and Super Saver with little difference in their rug. That report does not compare all machines or projects. | Check the yarn label and needle fit for the exact gun. |
The reports are individual experiences, not controlled comparisons. Read the discussion about Red Heart Soft, the comment on Comfort and Super Saver, and an owner report using Super Saver in that context.
How to check whether it fits your gun
- Check the yarn weight and strand guidance in your gun's manual.
- Thread the exact yarn through the needle. It should pass without force or obvious drag.
- Try a small piece of scrap cloth before starting a rug.
- If the yarn slips or jams, check the threading path and needle opening before adding more strands.
For model-specific needle-opening guidance, use the yarn slipping and jamming guide. For a sample-based quantity estimate, use the yarn calculator. The existing Red Heart Super Saver Lavender listing is on that page with its Amazon disclosure; check the color and pack variant before ordering.
Does acrylic yarn make a durable floor rug?
The yarn label alone cannot answer that. Pile height, density, tufting, adhesive, and backing all affect the finished rug. The manufacturer describes Super Saver as washable yarn, but that does not mean a finished rug with glue and backing can be machine washed. Follow the care instructions for the complete rug materials.
Sources and limits
This page uses the manufacturer's published yarn specification and cited owner discussions. It does not report a hands-on test or claim a universal strand count. Check the exact color and package label before ordering.
